Coach Smedley Biography

“Coach” Alisa Smedley is a training consultant who was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She has extensive experience in community and facility-based programs serving a diverse group of clients including justice-involved, low-income, chemically dependent, and youth. Coach Smedley was a provider of direct services to recovering addicts through a SAMHSA-funded grant in the state of Ohio for six years. After relocating to Washington, D.C. in 2011, Coach Smedley became the coordinator of the American Job Center located inside the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, a maximum-security jail in Maryland until 2020. Coach Smedley has also developed tablet content for incarcerated students and advised community colleges on best practices for Second Chance Pell Grant education programs. In 2022 Coach Smedley joined the Board of the Maryland Career Development Association where she acts as the Membership Board Director.  

Coach Smedley’s personal experience includes her father’s incarceration when she was ten years old and having six uncles and an aunt serving a combined 75 years behind bars. Coach Smedley travels around the country as a conference speaker and subject matter expert.

She is the author of Embracing Your Story: How to Build a Great Life Out of Hardships about childhood poverty and the effects of parental incarceration. Coach Smedley also publishes industry training materials. She lives in Albany, New York.
